When the Cardinals signed Beltran to a 2 yr deal after the 2011 regular season to replace the offense from Albert Pujols I got pretty excited. I always liked Beltran with the Mets. A good combination of power and speed in his prime. After he signed, he proceeded to hit .269 with 32 dingers and 97 RBIs. He was a force in the middle of the lineup.
Lance Berkman earned a new contract after a very successful 2011 season and really disappointed. He only played in 32 games and had only 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. He just couldn’t stay on the field. My question is, are we going to see something similar from Beltran in his second year for the Cardinals? He’s hobbled around on his broken toe and has combined for a 1-10 start this season. Just looking at him run the bases tells anyone he isn’t healthy. I know it’s a small sample size but you have to wonder if the WBC fatigued the 35 yr old.
I don’t understand the logic behind continuing to play Beltran when he isn’t 100%. It is so
easy to stick Craig in RF and play Adams at 1st. I know it’s early but I keep having flash backs to Berkman’s second year.
